History of "Pahantorjuja"
In the early 1970s, while demolishing an old barn on the banks of the Vanjoki River in Jokikunta, Vihti, the men of the Ryönä farm discovered a strange pattern on a part of the stone foundation. The owner, Samuli Nissi, invited a local history teacher to examine the stone, on the surface of which a peculiar ”stick figure” had been carved. The stone was named "Pahantorjuja "stone.
It is not known who carved the figure into the stone, why, or when. The figure carved into the stone is believed to have made its way to Vihti in the 14th century with Novgorodians traveling in the area. Following similar images leads far to the east, all the way to Byzantium, Syria, and Egypt, to early Christian times, the first millennium.
The Stone of the Punisher is currently on display at the Vihdinti Museum, where it was transferred in cooperation with the Finnish Museum Board.
